TAX TIPS

IRS Audits & You
There are some steps you can take to make an audit of your tax
return less likely and, in the event that you are audited, steps that
you can take to make that experience less painful.
To avoid being audited, your best defense is a good offense. File
an accurate, complete return, and keep good records and support-
ing documentation for income items and deductions that you claim.
Keep your records long enough to meet the statute of limitations for
the tax return related to them. The federal statute is three years from
the later of the date the return is due or is actually filed. The statute
is six years if over 25% of gross income is omitted from the return
and there is no time limit on fraudulent returns or where no return
has been filed.
Two kinds of audits are conducted by the IRS. The first is the of-
fice audit, an examination done by correspondence or at an IRS of-
fice. The IRS will ask for information or documentation related to
specific items on your return. These audits can often be concluded
very quickly by providing the requested information. The second kind
of audit is the field audit which is usually conducted at the taxpayer's
home or place of business. Questionable items on the return have
been identified by the IRS, but the agent is not limited to these in
his examination.
The IRS uses a complex system to select returns for audit. In
general, your return will be at higher risk for an audit if you take cer-
tain kinds of deductions (deductions for tax shelters, home office,
or travel and entertainment, for example), if your occupation involves
cash income, (taxi drivers and waiters, for example), or if your income
is high.
If your tax return is actually selected for audit, your best strategy
is to be cooperative and provide the requested information prompt-
ly. Unless the problem is simple and routine, contact your accoun-
tant immediately. A professional can put your mind at ease and very
likely save you time and money.

Lake Pointe Medical Center Offers
$50 Mammograms Throughout April
Due to response beyond ex-
pectations, Lake Pointe Medical
Center will extend its offer of
mammograms for $50 to non-
symptomatic women age 35 or
older, according to an announce-
ment today by Dr. Scott Allen,
Chief of Radiology for the new
hospital. The offer will be extend-
ed through the month of April.
"We were amazed at the re-
sponse to this offer," commented
Dr. Allen. "More than 200 women
received the examination, and we
had a difficult time getting them
all scheduled, so we decided to
feature the special for another
month."
Joyce Fisher, President of the
Rowlett/Rockwall Chapter of the
American Cancer Society, add-
ed, "I'm thrilled that so many
area women chose to have this
examination made, and very
pleased that Lake Pointe decid-
ed to extend its offer. I hope that
many more women will take ad-
vantage of it."
Since Lake Pointe was not
open at the time of signups for
the Texas Breast Screening Pro-
ject, sponsored by the American
Cancer Society, it was not a part
of that program. But by making
the same specially priced offer,
the hospital sought to demon-
strate its support of the program.
Women who wish to have the
mammogram may call 412-
C-A-R-E for an appointment.
Following the examination, re-
sults will be sent to the partici-
pant's physician, or to a physician
selected from a provided list.
The American Cancer Society
recommends monthly breast self-
examinations starting at age 20,
professional physical examina-
tion of the breast at three year in-
tervals between the ages of 20
and 40, and annual exams there-
after. A baseline mammogram is
recommended between the ages
of 35 and 40, followed by annual
or biennial mammograms from
the ages of 40 to 49, and annual
mammograms from the age of 50
on.
